Government College of Education, previously known as Government Post-Graduate Basic Training College, was founded in August 1954 under a special scheme of Government of India in the Second Five-Year Plan for establishment of training colleges for teachers at the post-graduate level. The College has great tradition of high achievements in the field of teacher education and ranks among the leading colleges of education in the country. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited Grade ?A? to this College. The National Council for Teacher Education has sanctioned 25 seats for M.Ed. (General), 300 seats for B.Ed. and 20 seats for B.Ed. in Yoga. A UGC Sponsored Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga Therapy has also been started with 25 seats. The college has spacious campus containing well maintained lawns playgrounds and separate hostels for boys and girls. It provides excellent library service. The Government Model High School and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-D work as experimental schools for the college. Government yoga health organisation, which has its own building in senior 23-A is a part of this college and is under the academic control of the Principal. A number of dimensions have been added to the teacher training programme so as to make it as comprehensive as possible. The syllabus prescribed by the Panjab University, Chandigarh is enriched by seminars, workshops symposia, community activities, educational camps and numerous modes of other practical work.
