Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture was established as Central Mango Research Station at Lucknow as a station of Indian Institute of Horticultural Research during 1972. It was upgraded to Central Institute of Horticulture for Northern Plains during 1984. It was renamed to present Institute during 1995. The major mandate of the Institute is to undertake basic and applied research to enhance productivity and develop value chain to major and minor subtropical fruits; to act as national repository of above fruit crops; to act as a Centre for human resource development and provide consultancy to stakeholders and to develop linkage with national and international agencies to accomplish the above mandate. The work on all the aspects of mandate fruits particularly mango has been the major thrust area of the Institute. The headquarter of All India Coordinated Research Project on Subtropical Fruits is also located at this Institute.
