The City of Coimbatore, known as the Manchester of south India, had numerous educational institutions except a law college till the year 1979. For the entire state of Tamilnadu, there was only one law college in Madras to impart legal education to the students. In 1974 another law college was started in the temple city (Madurai ) to cater the people of the southern districts of Tamilnadu. As the demand for admission to the law course was increasing and the existing two law colleges were already over crowded, the Government felt the need for opening more number of law colleges in different centres of the State. The proposal for opening two more law colleges, one at the industrial city (Coimbatore) and the other at the rock city (Tiruchirappally) to serve the interests of the people of western and central parts of the state respectively, was submitted to the Government by the, then Director of Legal Studies, Prof.S.Master Sankaran M.L.., and the same was approved by the Government of Tamilnadu in G.O. Ms. No.1407 Edn., dated 02.08.1979. Prod.T. Audiseshan of Madras Law College was deputed as special officer for establishing the law college at Coimbatore. The Government Law College, Coimbatore located at GEE DEE Hopt. Buildings, Avinashi Road, Coimbatore-641 014, commenced to function from August 1979. Later in January 1980, it was shifted to 9-B, Race Course Road, Coimbatore-18 and it functioned there till January 1991. Presently the College is housed in its own campus at Marudamalai, adjacent to the Bharathiar University. The new buildings of the Govt. law college were built at a cost exceeding rupees one crore. The present campus has a total area of 20.12 acres. Built in lush green mountainous, airy, clean and calm atmosphere at the foot hills of the western ghats, the campus is ideally suitable for one who wants to pursue legal education. Adjacent to the College, two hostels for men & women students have also been constructed. The Residential quarter for the Deputy warden of men?s hosptel has been provided inside the campus by the Government since the year 2004. The college offers 5 year course for Higher Secondary students, 3 year regular course for graduates and also 2 year M.L.Course in the branch ?Contracts including Mercantile Law? since the academic year 1999-2000. The title of the M.L. course has now been changed to ?Business Law?. In2015, the title of M.L. has been changed L.L.M. The Govt.
