Dindigul is a town of historic significance. It is named after the Rockfort which resembles a ?Thindu? (pillow). The fort is known for its architectural excellence. Dindigul is the District Headquarters. The location of the town is also geographically important, being connected to the other parts of the state and the nation both by road and rail. Two National Highways pass through Dindigul. The Western Ghats begin here and the climate is very pleasant, owing to the cool breeze from Sirumalai Hills which lie closeby. This district enshrines several leather, lock and textile industries. Hides and skin are exported to several countries; there is a great demand for the yarn produced here; locks and safety -lockers enjoy a good will in the national market. Vegetables, fruits and flowers cultivated in this land are sent to the Southern states. No doubt, Dindigul is a salubrious place to live in. Dindigul District is one of the backward districts of Tamilnadu. The main occupation of this land is agriculture. The poor farmers were not in a position to provide higher education for their girl children which remained a distant dream for the girls and their parents. At this juncture, Tamilnadu Government proposed to start an Arts College exclusively for women. The idea was well received by the local community. The most benevolent and the great philanthropic family of Anguvilas M.V.Muthiah Pillai magnanimously donated forty acres of land on the Dindigul-Salem Main road, in the heart of the town and in addition to it, a cash of Rs.1,00,000, a huge sum in the Sixties. In recognition of this benevolent patronage, the college was named after him. Subsequently, M.V.Muthiah Government Arts College for Women was established in 1966 in Dindigul by the Tamilnadu Government with the noble mission of providing higher education to women of this rural area. Initially, the college functioned in a Government building on the Palani Road. To begin with, Pre-University and Undergraduate Courses were offered with the strength of 175 students on the whole. The college was affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. This institution quenched the thirst for knowledge of the rural girl children, with an affordable fee structure. The availability of hostel accommodation facilitated the flow of students from the remote quarters of Dindigul District. In 1975, the college was shifted to the new building of the existing premises. A veteran politician, much interested in the welfare of this institution, Mr.N.S.V.Siththan, the Member of Parliament of the Dindigul District Constituency, allocated Rs. 2,60,000 for the purchase of computers in 1998 and later, in 2007, a sum of Rs. 27,00,000 for the construction of an auditorium in the college, from the Constituency Development Fund. With the improved infrastructure of manifold facilities, the college developed in all dimensions. In 2003, the college got affiliated to Mother Teresa Women?s University, Kodaikanal, a university meant exclusively for the empowerment of women. In the subsequent years, the college has made several strides and has now emerged out as the Premier Institute of Dindigul. Currently, the college offers 12 Undergraduate Courses, 8 Postgraduate Courses, 4 M.Phil Programmes and PG Diploma in Computer Applications. At present, this renowned institution caters to the educational needs of thousands of girls hailing from educationally and economically backward families.
