In addition to the academic program, the college places lot of emphasis on extra co- curricular & sports activities so as to promote all round development of the students. The Students Council organizes various competitions & activities during the academic year. Students also participate in various intercollegiate competition in the state. The Annual Day & the Sports Day are important events. The Student?s Council also organized "TARANG?. ?Tarang?, a Sanskrit word that translates to ?wave?, was a 2 days Inter-collegiate and Inter-higher Secondary School event that seeks to draw out the innate talent of the student community while also subtly imbuing in them a social message. In its inaugural year of inception, ?Goa? has been chosen as the focus of ?Tarang?, and through the 2 days event (that promises to create waves!!), the GCHS endeavours to rekindle within the students of today a deeper understanding, appreciation, and love of all things Goan! The dates chosen for the event was 23rd and 24th January 2014, followed by National Youth Week, and had been specially earmarked in a bid to revive within our youth a feeling of pride for the land of their forefathers whilst also igniting in them a passion for traditional art and culture. The College has an active NSS Unit, a Nature Club, Consumer Welfare Cell, Continuing Education Cell. The College commemorate the World Breastfeeding Week & the National Nutrition Week by organizing a myriad of activities. Departmental workshops/Seminars are an integral part of the co-curriculum. The Nutrition Awareness Programme (NAP) under the umbrella of the Global Healthy Kids Program was launched by Nestle India Limited to ?create awareness of good nutritional practices, healthy lifestyle and greater physical activity amongst adolescent school girls in rural and semi-urban areas. In India Nutrition Awareness Programme was launched on 7th April 2010 at Samalkha in Haryana in collaboration with five leading Universities. This includes Nestle?s collaboration with Goa College of Home Science. The College takes pride in its Handloom Weaving and Training Centre, set up under the patronage of Wendell Rodricks Fashion Designer of International Repute, which strives to design hand-woven Kunbi sarees. Ever since the Centre started functioning in August 2012, it has resulted in the production of numerous articles such as the revived Kunbi sarees, Cotton shawls, Stoles, Dupattas, Kashtis, fabrics, etc. The Centre was started with the objective of providing training to the Goan youth in addition to production of the Kunbi articles. The College has recently completed a Research Project titled ?Documentation Study and Utilization of Local Plants for Natural Dyeing? sanctioned by Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Government of Goa. The Research unit extracted natural dyes from local vegetation/flora available in Goa. The dyes so extracted and produced were tested and compared with AATCC (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colourists) Colour Standards, the globally accepted standards. The work aimed at developing an ecofriendly natural antimicrobial finish from plant resources for textile application.
