The thrust on universalization of Primary Education is more or less over. The stage is now set for universalization of Secondary Education. A significant new feature has been the extension of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to secondary Education in the form of the Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan. The twelfth plan has aimed to raise the minimum level of education to class X and accordingly universalize access to secondary Education; ensure good quality secondary education with focus on science, Mathematics and English. The norm will be to provide a Secondary School within 5 km and a higher secondary school within 7-8 km of every habitation. Government alone cannot manage this. So the number of private schools & colleges is on the rise. Along with access and equity, quality improvement is also needed. Ashoka College of Education can provide that. It is an English medium College. There is a growth of 274% in the number of students enrolled in the English medium schools from 2003 to 2011. It simply means that we are going to need teachers for secondary education who can teach through English medium.
