Durgapur Government College

Glimpses of Durgapur Government College Established on the 15th day of September ,1970, Durgapur Government College was affiliated to the University of Burdwan. Durgapur Government College is the only government degree college not only in the home district of Burdwan, but also in the neighbouring districts of Birbhum, Bankura and Purulia. The Government of West Bengal established the Durgapur Government College during the time of the genesis of Durgapur itself, an industrial town that was being built around a host of large and medium scale industries in the public and private sector and the ancillaries thereof. With the settlement of many thousands of industrial workers of all ranks in Durgapur, the need was felt for an institution offering higher education that would nurture prospective students a quality education and it was to meet this demand that the college was established. As being the oldest institution of its kind to come up in the steel city of Durgapur, The Durgapur Government College has moved from its initial modest intake capacity of 150 students to that of around 5000 students out of which fifty percent is girl students. The college is situated within around 30 acre sprawling campus which includes staff quarters, a playground and plentiful greenery. Solar energy is utilized as an alternative source of power within the campus. The institution was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of Bangalore in March, 2007 and obtained the grade B++ (83.5 point out of 100). Immediately after accreditation, the college reorganized a systematic drive towards realizing the goals of quality enhancement and substance. The first step for this was the setting up of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) as per the guidance of NAAC. At the beginning of each year, the IQAC monitors, regulates and formulates the upcoming issues regarding academic quality assurance. The Principal/ Officer-in-Charge, thereafter, implements a plan of action stating concrete objectives towards quality enhancement, designed to achieve measurable result at the end of the plan period. The vision of the college is to play definitive role in nation building by instilling in students the zeal to serve the larger community by becoming diligent and dedicated professionals in their chosen fields, and its mission to provide quality education that is informed with sense of progressive and modern outlook to all its students.
