Bonai, one of the three sub-divisions in the district of Sundargarhis famous for Lord Baneswar Temple. The river Brahmani flows northward caressing the Temple and making the place sacred to thousands of devotees from far and near. Full of forest, hills and mountains, rich in minerals and crowned with the scenic beauty of the Khandadhar water fall, the sub-division has a distinct age-old culture and tradition of its own which manifests itself in the local festivals observed here all the year round. This ex-princely state had its merger with the state of Orissa alongwith other princely state in 1948. Until 1947 there was no High School in the entire sub-division and students in those days walked as far as Deogarh and Talcher for their school education. Though Raja Dharni Dhar High School was established at Bonaigarh in 1947, there was no scope for higher education until 1971.
