When we speak about the history of an institution we speak about the toils and turmoil, odds and events that the institution has been through to look like what it is today. The history of Chengalpattu Medical College dates back to days before 1965 when this was a District Head Quarters hospital with its building in the Town. In 1965 the Tamil Nadu Government upgraded this District Headquarters hospital as a teaching institution with 250 beds for clinical training. Mr. Vedachalam Mudaliar the then Chairman of Chengalpattu Municipality donated the vast area which is in pocession of this institution today. To begin with, this institution had an annual admission of 50 students which the institution maintains till date. This 41-year old institution was the 6th of its kind to be started in Tamil Nadu. The first Dean of our college was Dr. P. Natarajan. The first batch of medical graduates passed out in 1972. In the same year, our college had the honour of conducting the National Anatomy Conference under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Jayavelu the Head of Department of Anatomy the. The maternity hospital of our college was in the old town building then near Municipal office, in it was shifted to the present location so as to function in integration with the other Departments. Our hospital, at its dawn, was functioning with the basic departments which include Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Ophthalmolgy, ENT, Psychiatry and Chest Clinic As days went by, the super specialty Departments started functioning one by one thus making our hospital a tertiary care center with multi Specialty approach. The super specialty presently functioning are Neurology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Neuro Surgery, etc., stitution was later promoted by allotment of PG course M.S. General Surgery, one seat per year.
