In the recent past, the dental science has emerged as an integral, fast advancing high-tech branch of modern medical sciences. The old concept and modalities of dental treatment have changed radically across the globe. In India too, oral and dental health care teaching and training modalities are advancing in a rapid pace and the qualified dental surgeons, specialists and super-specialists are now competent to take care of patients suffering from dental caries to oral cancer. The devastating nature of oral and dental health status in India, specially relating to dental caries, periodontal disease, dento-facial anomalies as well as oral pre-cancer demands many more numbers of medically competent qualified dental surgeons with a view to render quality dental health care services. The role of a dental teaching institution is undoubtedly most important for the purpose of comprehensive teaching and training of the budding dental graduates. The numbers of such dental teaching institutions are very few in eastern part of our country.
