Periyar E V R College

When higher education was beyond the reach of the oppressed and economically marginalized young generation in and around Tiruchirappalli region during the national independence, Thanthai Periyar, the visionary leader and social reformer had generously donated 9.65 acres of land in addition to 3.5 lakh rupees to the Government of Tamilnadu with a request to start a Government college in Tiruchirappalli town, to cater to the needs of them in the field of higher education. Utilizing the philanthropic help of Thanthai Periyar, the Government of Tamilnadu started a Government college at Mannarpuram, Tiruchirappalli during the academic year 1965 - 1966 and named it as Periyar EVR College. The Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Honorable M. Bhakthavatchalam inaugurated the college on 24.08.1965. Due to the selfless services and academic credibility, it attained autonomous status during 1998 - 1999. The college is now offering 14 UG and 13 PG programmes in addition to PG diploma in one of the departments. Twelve departments have been recognized as research centres both by the Government of Tamilnadu and Bharathidasan University, which offers M. Phil / Ph. D in full time and part time basis. The college campus has expanded to 52.62 acres with adequate classrooms and necessary infrastructural facilities. More than 3500 students are pursuing their higher studies both in regular and shift systems. 90% of them belong to oppressed and economically marginalized who hail from rural background. Many of them are first-generation learners. In all, Periyar EVR College performs the role of uplifting the poor students by providing them holistic higher education and make responsible individuals who are inclined to serve their families, society and ultimately the nation.
